  Many of these diaries were written to be sent back East and used as guides to the West by those who were to follow. Often these overland and settlement accounts were published in local newspapers.Written by the women who contributed to the development of the West,these accounts are less concerned with political and social issues and more concerned with surviving the journey and establishing a working community in a foreign environment. Included are narrations of the westward expansion, settlement of new territories, native americans and reflections on the Civil War.
